Retail Ransacked: Theft on the Rise

Decency Exposed: The New Culture Wars

We’re not the fashion police — though we’re asked that question quite often! — but we are keeping a close watch on current developments involving fashion and policing.  Join us on the eve of New York Fashion Week for FASHION POLICE, a double-header symposium in partnership with the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.  The first panel, “Retail Ransacked: Theft on the Rise,” will address this growing trend, its causes and effects, and strategies and public/private initiatives to combat it.  In case you missed our popular event at San Diego Comic Con, we’ll reprise it with our second panel, “Decency Exposed: The New Culture Wars,” an exploration of obscenity, decency, and current regulation of what we do or don’t wear.  We look forward to welcoming you back to campus for the first time since the start of the pandemic!  Dress code: Clothed, please.

Inside Out 7

Sad face mask wearing a surgical mask, next to a smiling face mask
As the curtain rises on the post-pandemic era, spring arrives in the northern hemisphere, and fashion runways herald a fresh wave of creative design, the words of F. Scott Fitzgerald seem particularly apt:

I once thought that there were no second acts in American lives, but there was certainly to be a second act to New York's boom days.

Indeed, the entire world is poised for a fresh start after an unanticipated intermission -- but how will the forces of change play out on fashion law's global stage?  Our 7th annual February fashion month event, "Inside Out 7: Fashion's in-house counsel on the industry's next act," brings together a distinguished group of counsel from leading fashion companies to share their insights into proposed sustainability legislation, newly revealed perils of boilerplate language, retail security challenges, diversity developments, intellectual property meets digital fashion, and more.  We look forward to seeing you online this Friday, February 25, from 8:45-10:00am New York time -- ready to remove our masks and act!

The Emperor’s New Clothes

Shirtless grey-bearded old man wearing crown and blue shirt and holding Fashion Law Institute gavel logo sees himself fully clothed in mirror

Welcome to the future of fashion – or at least a profitable parallel universe!  Even as the fashion industry has endured a pandemic era characterized by working from home in sweats, we’ve seen dramatic growth in digitized and digital-first fashion for our avatars in online dressing rooms and virtual worlds, fashion-related NFTs (authorized or otherwise), and wearable technology that opens doors to the metaverse in the form of AR and VR.  Fashion consumers aren’t likely to go without tangible threads entirely, unlike the emperor in the classic tale, but the possibilities for virtual fashion are endless – as are the related intellectual property and other legal issues.

In keeping with this duality of digital and physical worlds, please join our panel of experts as we convene both online via livestream and in person before a small studio audience, in a space provided courtesy of Diane von Furstenberg in NYC.  We are excited to take a step toward the return of in-person events, but please understand that symposium seating is extremely limited and available by confirmed advance reservation only.  Attendees must show proof of vaccination to enter and wear masks when not eating, drinking, or speaking on the panel. The livestream of "The Emperor's New Clothes: Digital Fashion, NFTs, Cryptocurrency, and the New Intangibles" is, of course, open to all!
